Hair Styling

Here we have looked back at our initial drawings of the little girl in our film, and explored hair styles in oder to come up with the best and most realistic ones, here are our results:

Misfits

We decided to look at Misfits as it is a british horror drama based in modern england, we liked this as it would be similar to our horror movies, we looked at use of camera and characterisation

Looking at Blood

As we want our movie opening to be as realistic as possible, and as we are doing a horror, we felt it highly important to get a realisitic looking blood in order to make video convinsing, between us we have come up with lots of different recipies for blood. we decided to test them out on clothing as thats where most of our blood would come from in our film, here are our results;

between us we came up with 22 different recipies for blood, which are displayed on the two tshirts below

out of the 22 we then decided to ask peoples opinions on them , as well as our own and we came out with a shortlist of our favourite recipies

we liked the one on the bottom left of this scan as we felt, althought patchy in colour, it looked like a scab or a dried wound, it was created by mixing tomato ketchup and water based paint

We also liked this one, on the left, which is just red stencil paint

We also liked this one which was cochineal food colouring, coffee and sugar, it looks good but a bit too flat

this one looks good, as it has run well across the shirt, which large amounts of blood would to, it was made from red food colouring

And finally this one, which was created using cochineal food colouring, coffee, and iceing sugar, we liked how it was textured and was a strong shade of red

Location

Here are some photos i took of a potential location for the dream sequence of our film opening, i work in a toy shop and my boss said we could use the store room , today i took some photos

Girl Images

After finalising our idea about the dollshouse we felt the character of the young girl was important as she would be the most important element of the film opening, in class we came up with drawings of possible appearances for the young girl character; these are our results.

We liked the idea of pigtails as they displayed a child-like innoscence, we felt this juxtaposed well with the red dress which is a sign of danger and death

Again we used a juxtaposition in our design, the white outfit shows purity which clashes with the messy, dark hair.
Here we tired to recreate an image of a pure young girl, we dressed her in a formal dress to make her seem unsuspecting

Here we mixed the idea of pure blond girl with a dangerious red dress

Film Idea, Dolls House

After looking at different ideas in class which are centered around the idea of horror/ psychological horror we wanted to create a horror film that would be acessable to our age and our generation, we also wanted to do something fresh and new, after watching a variety of films we felt the most effective ones were based around new ideas and concepts instead of the idea of just a slasher killer

After talking it through in class we came up with the idea centered around a dolls house. The concept is there is a girl who captures teens and aduts and stores them in her toy warehouse before 'putting them in her doll house' by dressing them up and brutally murdering them, the emphasis of our film opening would be on the perfection and model-like quality of the doll house situation, this shows an importance on the mise-en-scene within our opening, it would be vital to create a convising reconstruction.

The idea of the opening is we see someone walking towards a warehouse, upon entering it we see a young boy , about our age (17) strapped to a chair dressed as a doll, he is unconcios, upon waking up he begins to panic, which is visable by a close up to the face, then the camera pans off to reveal various rooms of a dollshouse, each perfect in there decortation but with a brutally murdered victim within them, then the camera goes back to the panicing boy when suddenly he wakes up. He is in his room then we see him look out the window and into the house nextdoor, where he sees a girl playing with a dolls house, he then goes to school and the camera fades to black.

Secondary Research

So after looking at the two genres we decided to create a horror movie with psychological elements, to do this we felt it was nescessary to research into the genre further, we looked at another four films all of the same genre to gain inspiration for our final project, we again displayed these as spider diagrams, these are as follows:

'The Butterfly Effect' by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber

we chose to look at the butterfly effect due to its reputation as a psychologica horror film.

Next we looked at the film 'The Shining' by Stanley Kubrick

We decided to look at the skining due to it showing a how the psyche of one person can be effected and changed throughot a horror, aso it is an infamous film and shows the power that one famous line can have ('Heres Johnny!) , it is aso very music heavy.

Then we looked at 'The Happening' by M.Night Shyamlan

We chose to look at the happening due to its take on a tragic event on real life, also M.Night Shyamlan is an imfamous director within the horror genre

Finally we looked at the film 'Disturbia' by D.J Caruso

we chose this film as out of the ones we could find it was the one most centered around young modern life, something that we were earlier interested in.

Initial Research

Upon getting the project, we were torn between two genres, either brit gangsta or horror/psychological horror, as we were undecided we decided to look at examples of both of them, aiming to evauluate such things as: , codes and conventions, lighting, sound, characterisation, and most importantly, practicality of us re-creating this genre, we chose to display our findings as spider diagrams.
